About Alchemlist

A site with a mission

The mission of this website is to help you donate stuff to non-profit organizations and public schools near you, thereby saving landfill space (and closet space) while channeling much needed resources to organizations working in your community.

At Alchemlist.org, we want you to be able to donate stuff to the non-profit of your choice! Have a soft spot for women's organizations, find a shelter for battered women that can use that sweater that is just taking up space and collecting dust in your closet. Bought a new towel set? Donate your old one to an animal rescue organization near you. Just painted your fence and not sure what to do with the leftovers? How about the after-school program that needs paint for the play they are producing? After all, our mission is to use the internet to help non-profits (especially small ones) get the resources they need and to help you to have a choice, to allow you to quickly and easily find a good home for your no-longer wanted stuff. Clean out your closet. Save landfill space. Use Alchemlist.org to donate to an organization near you. Together we can strengthen our communities one donation at a time!

How we started

I had moved. A lot. Each time I moved, I ended up leaving stuff on the sidewalk and making last minute trips to Good Will, convincing myself that someone would make good use of that dishdrainer that wouldn't quite fit in my small, vacuum-packed car. Even when I wasn't moving, I always had a "give away" pile in the spare room but usually no designated "away". On top of this, I had volunteered. Most recently, I finished an internship facilitating ski trips for people with disabilities and disadvantaged youth. I knew that we had a huge need for hats, mittens, and other winter gear. I wondered how easy it would be for someone to find us if they wanted to find a good home for their old fleece? I got to thinking that I would love a website that allowed me to quickly and easily find local non-profits for stuff in my give-away pile. Just as I could go to CraigsList.org, Indeed.com or Idealist.org (search engines I was all too familiar with of late) and quickly find job postings, I wanted a website in which I could enter in the item I was looking to get rid of and my zip, hit enter, and within seconds be presented with a list that included the name, contact information, and brief description of organizations near me that could use it. I wanted to be able to choose. And with that vision, a taste (barely) of Photoshop, a taste (nibble really) of Dreamweaver, a little (a lot of) help from a friend, and a little free time, I started.
